Some folks want to surf, but they have no nearby ocean. Some folks want to snow ski, but they have no mountains nearby. Some would love to water ski, but they have no boat. But they can sure enough grab themselves a skimboard and do something just as much fun.

The best thing about one of these items is that you can make one for yourself in a slow afternoon, and it will be so worth the effort. What you need to do is find yourself an old piece of plywood. Make sure it is big enough to cut into a circle big enough for you to stand on with both feet. Two to three feet around and about half an inch thick will be just fine.

So you get the plywood cut into a circle, and this does not have to be pretty or perfect, and then you get the wood sealed up with something slick. Varnish, good waterproof paint, and urethane will all do okay. Ideally you will be able to get on some fiberglass resin or automotive finish products. Hard and smooth and slick is the rule for this.

Once everything is dry, it is time to go get it wet all over again, but with water this time. You need to find a spot of shallow water. The edges of rivers and creeks are always good, and what are really good are big field puddles after a sizable rain storm. Lacking any of these, just let the water hose run on the lawn for an hour or so and make your own.

When your there all you need to do is place the skimboard on the edge of the puddle, or pond, or shore, or whatever you have to run with. Then you step away a few feet for a good running start, and then leap onto the disc with gusto. If you mange to hit is just so, you will skim. If you do not, you eat dirt. Either way, you are going to have a blast.

After a few successful runs, and more than a few falls, you may become the ruler of the skimboard universe. You may need to get out and find a commercial model just to keep up with your bad self. And when the Olympic Committee figures out what you already know, you will get the call to go for the gold.
